Further Podium Member: Professor Jan Rath

We are honoured to welcome Prof. Jan Rath to the podium!

Prof. Rath is a leading scholar in the fields of urban sociology and cultural diversity. After studying cultural anthropology and urban studies at Utrecht University and earning his PhD in 1991, he joined the University of Amsterdam in 1993. Since 2005, he has held the professorship of Sociology, in particular the study of the city and its ethnic and cultural diversity, and in 2022, he was also appointed professor by special appointment at the Prof. Dr. J.A.A. van Doorn Chair at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

His research explores how cities in a globalizing world both reflect and shape unity and diversity. He focuses on how political, economic, and symbolic dimensions of urban structures influence life chances, economic opportunities, and social relations — and how these, in turn, shape the city. The well-known mixed embeddedness approach to migrant entrepreneurship is just one example of his impactful work.
